VCYP is made up of youth pickleballers from all over Ventura County ranging from ages 9-14.
Each team will pick four players in a snake draft format with a randomized order given to each coach. Teams can consist of boys and girls. There will be a clinic assessment for each division prior to each season testing serves/returns, speed, forehands, backhands, and drives/drops/dinks.
Each season will last six weeks. The first 5 weeks will be the regular season and the sixth week will be the playoffs.
The top four teams with the best record will earn a spot in the playoffs. If there is a tiebreaker between the teams’ record, we will then revert to total games won vs total games lost. If there’s still a tie, we will decide based on total games netted.
The playoff matchups will be the #1 team vs #4 and the #2 team vs #3 in the semifinals.
The two winners of each match will play for the finals on the same day!
There will be a coin toss prior to each match. The winner will decide if they want to serve first or choose the side they want. Each team will switch sides whenever one team reaches 13 first. Whichever side the team finishes the game on, they’ll then start the next game on that same side and so on.
Players will call their own out balls. A referee can overturn a call at any time. If a player doesn’t make a call right away, the referee will step in and decide the call.
Each team will be given one timeout per game. Each timeout is one minute long.
We will play Let balls. A Let is when a player serves and their ball hits the net and lands in the service box.
Foot faults fall into two categories, either while you are serving at the baseline or when you are playing shots at the non-volley zone line (Kitchen). There are two ways pickleball players can foot fault in pickleball:
Stepping on or over the service line during a serve is counted as a fault. You must first make contact with the ball before you can step on the line or in the court. Also you cannot laterally cross the imaginary lines that would be an extension of the center line or the sideline when you are serving.
The non-volley zone line. If you step on the line or inside the non-volley zone during a volley or after a volley where you were carried into it by your momentum from the shot, that is a foot fault.
(Around the Post)
When a ball is flung towards the sides of the court, the ATP shot is a trick shot that players use to hit the ball around the post and under the top of the net.
Shot where the player strikes the ball on the opposite side from their dominant forehand.
The court area diagonally opposite your side court.
A soft shot that arcs over the net and falls into the opposing non-volley zone.
A forehand shot hit straight and low, deep into the opposing backcourt.
A soft shot that clears the pickleball net and then falls short of the opposing players.
When a player lunges over the corner of the kitchen (Non-Volley-Zone) out of bounds to get closer to the net and smash the ball without breaking the rule of placing ones feet in the (Non-Volley-Zone) before the ball hits the ground.
A fault is any action that stops play because of a rule violation.
Paddle stroke on the same side of the body as you are holding the paddle. A right handed player’s forehand would start with their right hand behind them and follow-through across their body.
Hitting the ball after one bounce (compared to a volley which is hit midair).
Slang term for the Non-Volley Zone.
A return shot sent as high and deep as possible, thereby forcing the opposing side back to the baseline.
In doubles pickleball, to cross over into your partner’s side of the court to hit a shot.
Ideal position to receive the ball for return. Paddle is out in front of the player’s body and up at chest height with a neutral grip for either forehand or backhand return. Weight is evenly balanced and weight on toes with knees slightly bent and ready to move in any direction.
An area between the baseline and the non-volley-zone line that serves as a middle ground as players move from far hitting shots to dink near the non-volley-zone.
shot that is hit above the hitter’s head with a serve-like motion. It is also referred to as an overhead.
Hitting the ball in the air before the ball has a chance to bounce onto the pickleball court.
